The Western Australian government has introduced long-awaited privacy legislation, promising its first-ever privacy commissioner and a mandatory data breach notification scheme should it pass before the fast-approaching election.
The state’s Attorney-General John Quigley introduced the Privacy and Responsible Information Sharing (PRIS) Bill on Thursday alongside another bill to establish new deputy commissioner roles for privacy and information.
Western Australia is one of only two states in Australia without legislated privacy protections, with the other being South Australia. SA, however, has already introduced information privacy principles.
